In commemoration of the heroic
deeds of those who laid down their lives for the sake of their
motherland, war memorials are constructed. Certain war memorials
have been constructed in the memory of those who have sacrificed
their precious tomorrow for our today.
DefenceIndia pays tribute to
those courageous soldiers by dedicating this page to all heroes
of the country who sacrificed their precious tomorrow for
our today.
Victory
War Memorial (Chennai)
Adjacent to the Fort St. George on the south is the War Memorial,
which housed the coastal battery and was formerly called 'Cupid's
Bow the Victory was Memorial honours those who have laid down
their lives for their country since the First World War.

Hall (Chennai)
War Memorial Hall: A circular rock and marble structure built
in memory of those who laid down their lives for the country's
honour during World War I. Situated on Beach Rd (Nr Island
Grounds).
HALL OF
FAME (Rajouri)
The great memorial 'Hall of Fame' has been constructed in
commemoration of the heroic deeds of those who have laid down
their lives for the sake of their motherland in this sector
of Rajouri and Poonch. Lt. Gen. S.P. Malhotra, PVSM, laid
the foundation stone of "Hall of Fame" in 1982 the
then GOC-in-C Northern Command. About two years later, on
October 29,1984, this monument was declared open by the then
Lt. Gen. Chibber, PVSM, AVSM, GOC-in-C North Command.
USMAN
MEMORIAL (Rajouri)
Memorial has been constructed at Jhangar in the memory of
Brig.Mohd Usman. Brig. Usman was mainly responsible for freeing
the captured area around Jhangar. After having captured this
strategic area, Brig. Usman convened a conference of army
officers to decide about the future course of action/ meanwhile,
he fell to the heavy shelling of the enemy on 3rd July 1948.
The body of Brig. Usman was taken to Jammu in his caravan
from where it was flown to Delhi. He was buried with full
state honours. The then Governor General and Prime Minister
of India attended the last rites of Brig. Usman.
The Infantry unit located at
Jhangar maintains this great memorial. The heroic deeds of
armymen as well as civilians who died while fighting in this
area are commemorated every year on 3rd July as "Jhangar
Day". Along with this great memorial another memorial
has been constructed in memory of those of 268 Ind. Bde. who
gave their lives for honours and glory of their motherland.
India
Gate
Situated on the Rajpath, New Delhi, India Gate i.e. originally
called All India War Memorial was built by Edwin Lutyens to
commemorate more than 70,000 Indian soldiers who died in World
War I and the Afghan Wars. The names of the soldiers who died
in the wars are inscribed on the walls. Burning under it since
1971 is the Amar Jawan Jyoti (eternal soldier's flame) which
marks Unknown Soldier's Tomb. India Gate, the 39.62 metre-high
and 27.43 metre-wide arch commemorating the British and Indian
soldiers who died in World War I and in the Afghan War of
1921. Each brick has the regimental number of the fallen hero
and each tells a tale of the battles that were fought in France,
Flanders Iran, Mesopotamia, East Africa and in the North West
Frontier Province.
To the dead of the Indian armies
who fell honoured in France and Flanders Mesopotamia and Persia
East Africa Gallipoli and elsewhere in the near and the far-east
and in sacred memory also of those whose names are recorded
and who fell in India or the north-west frontier and during
the Third Afgan War.
WAR MEMORIAL
AT GUJJAR MANDI CHOWK (Rajouri)
The war memorial has been raised at Gujjar Mandi Chowk in
Rajouri, township. Indian army liberated Rajouri on 14th April
1948. Major General Kulwant Singh launched an attack against
Pakistani forces that had converted the site of present air
field into a slaughter ground on 13th April 1948.
Enemy killed about 13,000 persons and the survivors had to
escape to forests for their lives before Maj.Gen. Kulwant
Singh could come to their rescue. He was the only person to
lead his troops from Chingus to Rajouri on 10th April 1948
leaving over 500 Pakistani soldiers dead in clashes at various
places.
A Fauji Mela is organized on
13th April every year in the memory of those killed.Besides
the above-mentioned important war memorials, a few others
also exist at various places in this district. We salute the
martyrs who gave their precious tomorrow for our today.
Sehjra
War Memorial (Ferozepur)
It recalls the sacrifices of the brave soldiers of 48 Infantry
Brigade units in the 1971 war in the Khemkaran sector. This
memorial, called Sehjra War Memorial, was constructed in 1999
by 48 Infantry Brigade to commemorate the famous victory in
the battle of Sehjra bulge. The capture of this bulge of 52
sq km on December 6, 1971, eliminated the enemy threat to
Ferozepore town and Harike bridge. The battle took a heavy
toll on the Army.
The then units with 48 Infantry
Brigade, which was part of Golden Arrow Division i.e. 1/5GR
(FF), 6 Mahar (Borders), 9 Sikh LI, 3 Cavalry and 174 Field
Regiment were bestowed with the theatre honour "Punjab
1971" and battle honour "Sehjra" for their
gallant action. Besides, six Vir Chakras (VCs), six Sena Medals
(SMs) and one Ati Veshisht Sena Medal (AVSM) were awarded
to the officers and men of the brigade and its units.

Rifles Martyr's Garden
This Battalion is the smallest independent fighting unit in
the army. We have visited their Martyr's garden in Almora.
It is special memorial service held to remember those who
had fallen during the battles fought during Operation Rakshak,
and Operation Vijay (Kargil).
Northern
Command Headquarter memorial at Udhampur
Northern Command memorial "Dhuruva", named after
the Hindi word for the Northen Star, to be the guiding light
for the future generations of Soldiers guarding the Northern
frontiers of India.
