Surgeon Vice Admiral Vasant Shripadarao Dixit, VSM has taken over as the Director General Medical Services (Navy) on 01 May 08.  He was commissioned as Surgeon Lt on 20 Sep 1971.  He is a graduate from Karnataka Medical College, Hubli and qualified in MD (Medicine) from Mumbai University. He is an alumnus of National Defence College, Delhi.  Before taking over reins of Naval Medical Branch, the Admiral has commanded two premier naval hospitals, INHS Sanjivini and INHS Asvini at Kochi and Mumbai respectively. 

He has also been Command Medical Officer at HQ Eastern Naval Command in 2005 and Western Naval Command, Mumbai till 30 Apr 08.  He has remained a doctor at heart always and held dear the Hippocrates teaching, “Thou shall not harm thy patient”.
