His soul wanted to prove itself,
He was the man of firm determination,
He was Major Somnath Sharma.

It was a shimmering day of 3 Nov 1923. This was the day when an Army doctor Amarnath Sharma was blessed with a son in Jammu, which is known as a crown of India and situated on the bank of Tawi River in the foothills of Himalaya. The child got the name Somnath Sharma. The boy was growing in an Army surrounding. When he reached in age of 4, he was sent to the Hampton Court Convent at Mussorie, then to shillong and after that his destiny brought him to the Sherwood College of Nainital at the age of 11.

This boy was showing his inclination to serve his nation through Army. So he took admission in Wales Royal Indian Military College,Dehradun in July 1934.Here, a long period of seven years was spent by him. In these seven years he became a cadet and passed out in 1941. Then with firm determination, he tried for "Army Entrance Examinations" and finally got through.

Its an old saying that a teacher is like a burning candle who gives light to others by consuming itself. These lines are best suited to the teachers of Somnath as they contributed a lot to make him a reliable, firm determined and trust worthy.when ever somnath got the dark clouds, his teachers brought him a rainbow of aspirations.

After passing out from RIMC, Somnath joined Military Academy where he was learning the tacts and nuances about how to overcome the dangerous situations during a war as well as what kind of things would act as a armour for him.Somnath traveled the way to his destination and turned in to a Second lieutenant in the age pf 19 in Hyderabad Regiment which is now called as 14 Kumaun. At this time, no one knew that this brave Second Lieutinant would receive "Param Vir Chakra" posthumously.

Days were passing one by one and everything was going clock wise. Suddenly, Somnath fell sick badly. He was admitted in the British Military Hospital, Banglore. His heart beats were not accompanying his body and his breath was supposed to be stopped. But he defeated the death and got victory over the charioteer of death.

Somnath was a fearless personality and soon he got the chance to prove it duting a Arakan Campaign against Japanese in Burma, here he took a risk on his life to met his objectives. After burma he moved to Malaya and then laid back in India In 1947. Here he was responsible to discharge the duties of Adjutant (Staff Officer to a Commanding Officer of a battalion of 4 kumaon. This battalion was controlling over civil disturbance in 1947. At that time, India was having troubles on the border areas and Major Somnath Sharma presented a good example of his abilities in those delicate situations. So he was appreciated by higher authorities for his efficient commanding. But the period of hampering had been started.

After some time, Pakistani raiders started entering in India through Jammu and Kashmir. There were many routes to Srinagar but one was used to pass through village Badgam which led straight to Srinagar Airfeild. This Airfield was the only way to India by air. A battalion was formed which had to guard the Badgam from being captured by Pakistani raiders. Major Sharma was chosen to lead this battalion. He and his battalion set a headquarter over there. The battalion fought for many days and repulsed attacks of raiders but there was moving something else in the powerful mind of destiny. A day arrived when few soldiers were left in the battalion of Major Somnath Sharma. That was a strange day. The wind was blowing so harsh and a strange kind of calmness was there which was a sign of a mishappening . Major Sharma demanded for more soldiers to be there to his Commanding Officer. But those soldiers who were supposed to be there, got late to get Major Sharma help out.

Soon Major Sharma was besieged with his few soldiers by Pakistani raiders. Major Sharma got injured very badly in that attack. The blood was flowing very rapidly from the body of Major Sharma but the eyes of this brave was on his target .Finally Major repulsed all the attacks and many were killed by the battalion of Major Sharma. But he was attacked by some raiders and lastly a motor shall burst close to him and he laid to the rest forever. When Indian soldiers reached Badgam they found him dead. But finally the Srinagar Airfeild was saved from Pakistani Raiders.
