The Mechanised Infantry Regiment
is an infantry regiment of the Indian Army. It is the youngest
regiment in the army, and was formed as result of lessons
learned in the 1965 Indo-Pak War, to give infantry battalions
greater mobility. Initially, this involved equipping some
of the older infantry battalions of various regiments with
armoured personnel carriers. However, there was a need to
develop a common philosophy in regards to these type of tactics,
so the various mechanised battalions were regimented under
a single cap badge as the Mechanised Infantry Regiment in
1979.
