Insignia: An Assaye Elephant posed upon a shield with
two crossed swords.
The Madras Regiment is the oldest
regiment in the Indian Army. It was set up in the former Madras
Province. This regiment assisted Britishers in war capture
Burma and the then Ceylon. This regiment under Wellesley against
the Peshwa's army at Assaye, had chivalrously performed. And
later won Madras regiment's elephant-crest.
