5TH OF MAY,A GOLDEN DAY OF GARHWAL REGIMENT

" Main houn unke saath khari jo sidhi rakhte apni reer"

These immortal lines are penned by Harivansh Rai Bachchan. These lines are apt representation of the valour, sacrifice and patriotic sense displayed by the Garhwal Regiment. The heroes of this Regiment have carved their names in the pages of history.

5th of May is important day for Garhwal Regiment as it came in to existence on this day, after getting separated from Gurkha Regiment in 1887 under the command of Lt Col EP. Lansdowne is the HQ of this Regiment in Garhwal. In the past, India was being ruled by British Government. At that time, this Regiment was a merged with Gurkha Regiment. The performance of few soldiers was appreciable and British Govt separated these soldiers of Garhwal and combined them under the umbrella of "Garhwal Regiment".

Garhwal is a hill area of India which is known for its rigidness, and the denizens for their simplicity and upright manner. The mountains of Garhwal guard our motherland adverse conditions and an unfavorable environment; in the same way, the sons of Garhwal defend their country with courage and hardiness. The surroundings of Garhwal inspire every boy with a zeal to do something admirable and this zeal leads them to be a part of The Garhwal Regiment. This is the reason why 2500 soldiers get recruited in this Regiment every year.

Garhwal Regiment has completed a long period of 109 years. In this period, this Regiment fought many battles and showed its exceptional courage. The account of this regiment is full of glory as is evident from the slew of awards that the regiment has collected; 1 Ashok Charka, 4 Mahavir Charkas, 13 Kirti Charkas and 52 Vir Chakras.

During 1930, when we were being under the British rule, some grievances took place between Garhwal Rifles and the Govt in Peshawar; The soldiers refused to open fire on unarmed civilians who were protesting against the unlawful arrest of Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan. In this way The Garhwal Regiment laid the foundation for their participation in the battle for independence. During the First World War, 721 soldiers lost their lives and 349 in Second World War. Recently in The Kargil Conflict, this Regiment Played a decisive role in dislodging Pakistani forces in Operation Vijay.

The motto of this Regiment is - Yudhaya Krit Nischya

The war cry is- Badri Vishal Lal Ki Jai

DefenceIndia congratulates Garhwal Rifles on its Raising Day as they are one of the essential components of India's Defence might.
