Piru Singh was born on 20th
May 1918 in Beri Village, Jhunjhunu district, Rajasthan. His
family had a agricultural background. He was the youngest
one among his family. Since his child hood he was not interested
in studies. But he was admitted in school forcefully. The
behaviour of his family was not able to bind him with studies. As
a result; he ran away from his school and started working
in the field of his father. This was the time when he started
to learn about the motherland and a strong feeling of love
for his nation as well as motherland grew up in the depth
of his heart.
In his leisure period he used
to do hunting. So, he became a profound hunter as well as
a sportsperson. His interest forced him to join the Indian
Army. After two unsuccessfull attempts, he sailed through
in third attempt and became a part of Indian Army. Previously,
he joined 10/1st Punjab Regiment on May 20 , 1936 at the age
of 18. Later in 1937, he was posted to 5/1st Punjab and after
partition, was transferred to 6 Rajputana Rifles.
Piru Singh was totally uneducated
but his desire to serve Army forced him to take his Army education
seriously and this resulted in to a victory over examinations
and this man turned into Lance Naik in 1940. That was the
example of firm determination. Then the growth chart of Piru
Singh started to rise and very soon he became the instructor
of Punjab Regiment at Jhelum in 1941. Soon he promoted to
the rank of Havildar and sustained to this post till 1945.
In 1946, he got a chance to
show his aptitude as he served with commonwealth occupation
force in Japan and stayed there till 1947.
In 1947, Major Piru Singh expelled
the Pakistani invaders from Urisector but soon they recollectd
and forced the Indian Army to check out of their position
across the river Kishanganga.
After this impede, Indian took
the position on Tithwal Ridge and 6 Rajputana Rifles moved
to Tithwal from Uri to defend that area. The two companies
were made namely"D" and "C" to protect
them but "C" had to lead after "D" company.
That was the calm and cool night
of 18th of July and the battalion was proceeding towards its
aim. They were hardly 1 metre away from their destination.
The route was being watched over by the Invaiders as they
took a position to defeat Indian Army. They attacked the platoon
and the leaders of this company got injured and disable to
proceed. In a very next moment, Piru who was the Second-in-Command
took the charge of platoon with handful of his soldiers without
wasting the time. He took the charge on nearest machine gun,
using a war cry "Raja Ram Chandra Ki Jai". He found
the bunkers of enemies and destroyed two of them. Then he
proceeded with all the courage but there was written something
else in the pages of his destiny. He was very near to the
third trench when a bullet hit him on his head. Soon an explosion
took place because his hand was full of grenade and Havildar
major Piru Singh laid to the rest for ever.
That was the whole scenario
how Piru Singh fought for his motherland. These brave men
make the nation proud. Major Piru Singh was the second brave
man who was awarded with "Param Vir Chakra" posthumously.
These valiant are born once
but are remembered year after year.
The next story begins with Naik Jadunath Singh
