Battle of Atgram - 20/21 Nov 1971
{ Sylhet District - East Pakistan }
Khukri Assault By 4/5 Gorkha Rifles { Frontier Force }

Brigadier Rattan Kaul, 4/5 Gorkha Rifles {Frontier Force}

“Trust each other again and again, when the trust level gets high enough, people transcend apparent limits, discovering new and awesome abilities for which they were previously unaware.– David Armstead”

This is an account of a classic battle of surprise, Khukri and bravery on both sides. The opposing commanders were awarded their respective country’s second highest bravery awards {Brigadier Harolikar {MVC} and Late Major Alvi of Pak Army Hilal-e-Jurat {Posthumously}}. The battle also talks of dilemma, personal Izzat, upholding of tribal ethos by a Pak Army Tribal from Tochi Scouts. It also talks of some prominent figures involved in this saga; General Krishna Rao who became our Army Chief later. Also talks of Late General Zia-ul-Rehman, then a colonel who also became Chief of Bangladesh Army and Later President of Bangladesh. You will find the human angles also in this battle, of late Brigadier Bunty Quinn; heroics of young leaders etc. BATTLE OF ATGRAM was the start of the final catapulting of Pakistan Army from the largest District of the East Pakistan {Bangladesh}.
