62 Cavalry, the First Indian Armoured Regiment of the independent
India, is celebrating its Golden Jubilee. This momentous event
will take place in Ambala on 31 March, 2006. The celebration
will begin with an impressive mounted parade which will be
reviewed by the Chief of Army Staff Gen J J Singh.
62 CAVALRY was raised by Lt Col RS Butalia on 31 Mar 1957
at Ambala Cantonment. Drawn from the existing cavalry regiments
of the time, 62 CAVALRY is constituted from the three warrior
classes of SIKH, JAT and DOGRAs.It has distinction of being
the First Indian Armoured Regiment to be raised entirely on
Tanks.
Merely into its ninth year, 62 CAVALRY took on the elite
of Pakistan's Armour head on in the 1965 operations. The Pakistani
troops had Patton tanks which were publicized as invincible
during the period and 62 Cavalry had Sherman as their war
Horses. But Sherman minnows proved to be shark for the Pakistani
tanks which were made out of modern metallurgy. And a fight
which was initially perceived as an unequal struggle took
the world by surprise. At the end of that war Pakistan lost
an estimated 300 tanks and India's losses were 128 tanks.
The Regiment was honoured by the President during its silver
Jubilee, when Late Shri Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy presented a
Guidon to the Regiment on 31 March 1981.
During the parade the COAS will bestow the Regiment with
a Standard in recognition of its achievements. The celebrations
will be graced by the Honourable Chief Minister of Punjab,
Capt Amarinder Singh, in recognition of the services rendered
by 62 CAVALRY personnel who hail from Punjab apart from Lt
Gen GD Singh, Deputy Chief of Army Staff (P&S), the Colonel
of the Regiment of 62 CAVALRY.
