Title:
The Indian Navy
|
ROLES OF THE INDIAN NAVY
It is obvious that our maritime assets are considerable and, therefore,
will inevitably require to be safeguarded. Our ability to safeguard our
own maritime interests is a function of our own internal unity, economic
strength and our maritime capability. The responsibility of protecting
these assets falls squarely on the 'men in white uniform'. One of the
Navy's task is to ensure that our maritime interests which have vital
relationships with the nation's economic growth, are allowed to develop
unhindered both in peace and war. The strength of the Navy will thus directly
contribute also to peace and security of the region.
Navies exist as a force that permits exercise of maritime
power. Policing and diplomatic roles are complimentary peace time missions.
THE MARITIME DIMENSION
It is evident that as a major maritime nation, our
vital economic and security interests are linked to the seas. Any aspirations
of the country emerging as a major power would, therefore, imply that
our Navy and our prowess at sea would play a vital role in our nation's
destiny. The primary purpose of the Navy is to deter threats to our national
security interests and if deterrence fails, to provide an effective military
response. It is, therefore, essential to maintain naval forces that are
not only adequate, but also recognised as adequate, to defend our strategic
interests, backed by surveillance, real time connectivity and putting
in place the 'system of systems'.
