The Chairman, Chiefs of Staffs Committee Air Chief Marshal SK Sareen had rung up the Minister a dozen times with respect to a matter, which later became public knowledge, i.e., the request of the three Chiefs to see him with respect to the conduct and behaviour Ajit Kumar, which had created quite an unprecedented situation. Except, General Malik, who had private channels connecting him with Ajit Kumar and Shri George Fernandes, none of the Proncipal Staff Officers and senior officers of the Army, Navy and Air Force Headquarters were willing to discuss any matters with Mr. Ajit Kumar. The Chiefs were, therefore, forced to sign a note to the Minister, which has been quoted in the media--

We were keen to meet you on a rather sensitive subject for the last four days. We have been finding that Shri Ajit Kumar has a negative and un-supportive attitude in several matters of importance. This 'negativism' has percolated down among all echelons of the Military Staff. The Defence Secretary also tends to be brusque and insensitive to the PSOs and COSC. This is not conducive to harmonious team-work.
