An Admiral's Fall

Day of sacking
December 30, 1998 was a Wednesday;
a day when Navy officers are allowed to wear civilian clothes.
Admiral Vishnu Bhagwat, the Chief of Naval Satff, wore a grey
suit and headed to the United Services Institute's complex
at Rao Tula Marg to attend a seminar. The seminar was being
addressed by his freind, Rear Admiral (Retd.) Raja Menon.
It was surprising that a man, who kept an eagle eye on everything
that happened in and around South Block, had no inkling of
a momentous decision being taken on the first floor of South
Block around that time; it would change his life forver.
He was infact cocksure about
his plans which he had so adroitly laid out to checkmate the
Government. He had persuaded the other two Service Chiefs,
General Ved Prakash Malik and Air Chief Marshal Satish Kumar
Sareen, to let him take over as the Chairman of the Joint
Chiefs of Staff Committee on December 28, three days before
the post was due to fall vacant. Sareen, who held the chairmanship,
was to retire on December 31.
