Textron Inc. and
Boeing Co. will demonstrate two of their new MV-22
Osprey aircraft at British air shows next month,
Textron said Wednesday.
The MV-22 is the
newest generation of Osprey, a hybrid that takes
off and lands like a helicopter but flies like
a plane.
Osprey aircraft,
which employs tilt-rotor technology, had a troubled
history going back to 2000, when a titanium hydraulic
line ruptured on board and caused the death of
23 Marines. After undergoing additional testing
and review over the past several years, the Osprey
is touted by commanders as having the ability
to haul more troops and equipment than existing
helicopters, and is taknig the place of aging
Marine fleets.
The companies said
U.S. Marines will fly two MV-22 Ospreys from North
Carolina to the United Kingdom in July for the
Royal International Air Tattoo and the Farnborough
International Air Show.
Pilots from Bell
Boeing, a strategic alliance between Textron's
Bell Helicopter and Boeing, will fly the aircraft
during the demonstrations.
The Marine Corps,
which is slated to buy 360 MV-22s, wants to develop
procedures for long-range, over-water flying of
the aircraft, Textron said. The companies also
hope the trip validates the aircraft's long-range
fuel system capability and aerial refueling data.
Shares of Providence,
R.I.-based Textron rose $1.36 to $83.87 in afternoon
trading on the New York Stock Exchange. Chicago-based
Boeing's jumped $4.12, or 5.4 percent, to $81.10,
as it won a new plane order from Singapore Airlines
and watched its rival, Airbus, struggle amid delivery
delays for its newest jumbo jet.
