Defence Research and Development
Organisation had undertaken development of Kaveri engine
to meet the propulsion needs of Light Combat Aircraft
(LCA) project, Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee said
today.
In a written reply in
Rajya Sabha, Mukherjee said in order to expedite the
Kaveri engine development, the DRDO has explored the
possibility of partnership with other leading manufacturers.
During Aero India 2005,
a number of military engine manufacturers displayed
their technology, he said, adding expression of interest
have been sought from all reputed manufacturers.
Gas Turbine Research Establishment,
a Bangalore-based laboratory of DRDO, has spent Rs 1,159
crore till June on the Kaveri engine, which has been
planned to be integrated with LCA by March 2007, Mukherjee
said.
To another question, the
Defence Minister said India has welcomed the US response
to its request for information for procurement of a
Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft for country's Airforce.
He said the Director,
Defence Security Cooperation Agency of the US during
his visit to New Delhi in April, had conveyed Washington's
willingness for defence supply, co-production and research
and development in areas of advanced defence technologies.
Further, he said India
is planning to upgrade Sukhoi-30 aircraft with latest
avionics and weapons. The upgradation is planned from
this year onwards but its final cost will be known after
completion of the negotiations.
