Pilotless target aircraft 'Lakshya' test flown

Chandipur (Orissa), April 27, 2005 (Agencies)

'Lakshya', the pilotless target aircraft (PTA) was test-flown for the second time in three days from the integrated test range (ITR) at Chandipur, in Orissa, about 15 km from Balasore today, defence sources said.

The indigenously developed microlight aircraft was test flown at 11.43 am. It was also tested from the ITR on Monday.

Designed by Aeronautical Developmental Establishment, Bangalore, 'Lakshya' can perform discreet aerial reconnaissance of battlefield and target acquisition, the sources said.

A sub-sonic re-usable aerial target system, the six-feet long 'Lakshya' is remote controlled from the ground and is fitted with a digitally controlled engine, the sources said.

Tested several times earlier, it has been deployed by the Indian Air Force in border areas.
