Musharraf to brief top Army Commanders on Indo-Pak talks

Islamabad, April 24, 2005 (PTI)

Close on the heels of his successful visit to India, President Pervez Musharraf is expected to brief Pakistan Army commanders on his "peace strategy" and his talks with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during a four-day meeting of the top brass beginning tomorrow.

Musharraf, who is also the Chief of the Army, would be presiding over the meeting of corps commanders, principal staff officers (PSOs) of general headquarters (GHQ) and formation commanders to be held tomorrow at the army headquarters in Rawalpindi, reports here said.

He was expected to give an elaborate briefing on his talks with Singh and Hurriyat leaders as well as the decision to pursue the peace process, specially in Kashmir where he proposed softening of borders with various Kashmir-specific CBMs like bus services and meeting points across the LOC.

The meeting was expected to take some important decisions with regard to the defence of the country, local daily The News said.

Apart from other subjects, the meeting will discuss combat preparedness of the armed forces, its strategic goals and training of personnel.

Internal and external threat perceptions would also be discussed, the newspaper quoted officials as saying.

Also expected to figure in the meeting were the new weapon systems like F-16s being acquired by the armed forces.
