ATK Composites - Composite Structures Design, Fabrication, Technology Development

ATK Composites is supplying upper wing skins for the F35 Joint Strike Fighter. Shown here is a wing skin fiber placed for the program's AAD phase. Fiber placement technology, pioneered by ATK Composites, provides unprecedented accuracy, reliability and material/labor savings.ATK Composites is a leading supplier of mission-critical composite structures to aerospace and defense primes. We provide over 40 years of cutting edge experience in the design, demonstration, and deployment of advanced composite manufacturing technologies to provide our customers with reliable, cost-effective solutions. Key markets served include military and commercial aircraft, launch vehicles, structures for deep space applications and select commercial applications.

COMPOSITE STRUCTURES DESIGN AND ENGINEERING

ATK Composites has supplied composite structures for the F/A-22 since the program's development phase. Complex shapes, like the F/A-22 Offtake Bypass Screen, combine both fabric and unidirectional materials. ATK Composites draws on more than four decades of composite structures development and manufacturing heritage to provide change to turnkey support or build-to-print services, including:

  • Engineering
  • Tooling
  • Fabrication
  • Assembly
  • Testing
  • Delivery

Key manufacturing technologies include automated fiber placement, hand layup, filament winding, tube wrapping, VARTM, and precision assembly. Our components and assemblies include sandwich, integrally stiffened, and monocoque structures.

MILITARY AND COMMERCIAL AIRCRAFT STRUCTURES

Filament winding technology, initially developed for rocket motors, has been transformed by ATK Composites to suit commercial aircraft applications like the 767 aircraft door spring. ATK Composites works with wet or prepreg fibers.ATK Composites has supplied lightweight, fiber-placed composite structures for a variety of production and development programs since the early 1980s - longer than any other composites supplier!

Structures produced by ATK Composites include cockpit, fuselage, wing and stabilator skins, inlet ducts, nacelles, wings, pivot shafts, hub covers, drive shafts and aircraft door counterbalance assemblies.

LAUNCH VEHICLE STRUCTURES

ATK Composites plays a leading role in the U.S. commercial launch vehicle industry, supplying fiber-placed, filament-wound, and hand-laid structures for the Atlas V, Pegasus, and Delta family of launch vehicles. Structures provided include payload fairings, nose cones, interstages, thermal shields, aeroskirts, adapters, and rocket motor cases.

SPACE STRUCTURES

ATK Composites provides conventional tubulars as well as complex geometric-shaped and curved tubulars, and a variety of sandwich panels and hybrid laminates with metallic inserts for optional benches, antenna support structures, solid surface and deployable reflectors, bus structures, and panels. Extremely low CTE and CME requirements are routinely met.
