Huge cache of arms and explosives recovered in J&K

Srinagar, September 19, 2005 (PTI)

Averting large-scale terror attacks across the state, Army troops recovered huge cache of ammunition and explosives, including highly sophisticated devices for making bombs, along the LoC in Baramulla and Kupwara districts of Jammu and Kashmir, defence officials said today.

The explosives were recovered from some caves during a combing operation in a jungle in Gurez sector yesterday, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of 28 Infantry Division Major General Mukesh Saberwal told reporters here.

The weapons seized from the hideouts included 14 Ak assault rifles, a rocket projectile gun, rocket propelled missile, 12 UBGLs, six pistols of Chinese and Pakistani origin, 80 sticks of RDX, besides huge quantities of grenades.

The troops also recovered 69 battery operated IEDs, large number of remote devices and several binoculars, he said.

The explosives, were enough to arm several squads of ultras to carry subversive activities in the state, he said.

In another operation, the security forces recovered huge quantity of highly technical and sophisticated devices used for assembling lethal IEDs, car bombs and even rockets.

The recoveries, made from five militants killed in an infiltration bid in Machil sector of Kupwara on Sep 10, included 100 printed circuit boards, more than 1000 integrated circuit capacitors, transmitters and wire cutters for making IEDs and car bombs.

A coded CD which contained technical data for assembling various types bombs and rockets was also seized, Saberwal said, adding the disc also contained militant training manual.

The material could be used for making more than 100 car bombs, he said.
